Maarten K. VAN AALST

Director, Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre

Maarten van Aalst is director of the international Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre which supports the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement to manage the rising risks of climate change and extreme weather events. Maarten holds adjunct appointments at Columbia University and University College London. He is Coordinating Lead Author at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and serves on the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the Leadership Group of the UN Climate Resilience Initiative (A2R). Since completing a PhD in atmospheric science, Maarten has also worked on climate change adaptation and disaster risk management with organisations such as the World Bank, regional development banks, OECD, UNDP and several governments.
